Wisdom & Wonder

Connecting the last two posts, to the extent that they overlap, we wander into wonder. A familiar space for me. Tracks in snow. Memories of cross-country ski adventures. Traces of footprints in sand.

Wandering between wisdom and wonder. Sometimes blurring the boundaries. Sometimes mistaking one for the other. Briefly. For a while.

Then reminding myself. Or allowing myself…

Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise; seek what they sought.

—Matsuo Bashō

Buttressing my wanders, my affinity for wonder with the wisdom of forbears. Not resting upon it. Not settling. Or not for long. More like stones in a river, stepping stones through a swift current. Crossing over. Bridging. Again and again and again.

Pursuing answers. And new questions. Reevaluating borrowed answers, well worn wisdom, in the quest for clarity. Interstitial certainty giving onto fresh wonders.

Remember to lighten my rucksack that it may fit new discoveries, that it mightn’t impair me as I skip from stone to stone in the swirling stream.
