Jumbo Blackberry

Jumbo Blackberry

This evening, walking to the house before dinner, my niece handed me a blackberry she’d picked in the garden. it was enormous. The biggest I’ve ever seen. And, without thinking, I popped the jumbo blackberry into my mouth. It exploded in flavor, like a fistful of normal sized blackberries, warmed by the sun. An explosion of inky indulgence!

And only then did I consider the extraordinary size, the possibly unique opportunity to document this polyploidy wonder. Too late. The festival of flavor was already subsiding on my palate.

Opportunity missed.

I’d need art and poetry to memorialize this juicy marvel.

So this evening’s graffiti is gifted to you instead. In lieu of the gigantic reality that intoxicated my taste buds, I offer you a watercolorish facsimile and a microscopic cluster of words.

Blackberry Haiku

Jumbo blackberry,
purple and plump as a plum,
mouthful festival.

A plum-sized blackberry bursting with inky indulgence. Sweet. Tart. Almost too large to believe. Reality trumps art. Again.
