A quick post this evening to thank Bob and Eric for hydroseeding the soon-to-be-grass lawns around Rosslyn’s icehouse. It’s been a disruptive 10+ months during rehabilitation, and given the site work and construction staging, debris, etc. we’ve become accustomed to mud, mud, mud. But today — at looong last — we begin the regreening.
Hydroseeding? What in the world is hydroseeding?!?!
Hydroseeding… is a planting process that uses a slurry of seed and mulch. It is often used as an erosion control technique on construction sites, as an alternative to the traditional process of broadcasting or sowing dry seed. (Source:Wikipedia)
Dirt today, grass, well, soon. Not exactly tomorrow, but maybe — if we’re lucky (and the weather defies the 2023 odds and actually cooperates — within a week we’ll start to see that first fuzzy adolescent fuzz of a future lawn.
Given the large area where we need to cultivate grass as well as a slightly steep grade change from the volleyball, bocce, and croquet court to the sunken terrace and lower lawn, hydroseeding made more sense than the alternatives.
And so we began the day with bluebird skies and a sprayed in lawn!
The blue-green glow of the hydroseeded areas look anything but lawn-like. More graffiti thank natural carpet…
And yet, swapping muddy brown for green feels like progress. Or, felt like progress. An afternoon cloudburst may / may not have undone the re-greening initiative we completed this morning. Only time will tell.
And so we begin the impatient waiting. For. Grass. To grow.
Hopefully a hardy carpet of vibrant “soil retention” will greet us a week from now, one of the first notable benchmarks on the journey to icehouse rehab completion.
