Hammocking with Carley in 2020

Take me back to the spring a summer of 2020. Height of ‘rona. And hammocking with Carley!

When memories drift back to that peculiar spring and summer of the Covid-29 pandemic, fear and paranoia come to mind. Manic masking, toilet paper shortages, spraying toxic clouds of disinfectant onto our groceries, and horrifying statistics mounting nationwide and globally,… But also hunkering with loved ones, Zoom cocktail parties, and pandemic puppies! Although I’ve posted previously about welcoming a new fog into our family during this unique time of flux, today I’d like to revisit a moment memorialized by Susan in the summer of 2020 that magically resurfaced on her phone today — thank you, Apple AI! — that she in turn forwarded to me. Hammocking with Carley in Rosslyn’s boathouse. A glimmer of bliss in a time of angst.

Happily hammocking
with puppy, seagulls,
and sun-warmed breeze, lakeside, midday, midsummer,
languid and worry free
except for a raging,
global pandemic.

She wriggles, curious,
downy furred round belly,
velvet ears, midnight nose,
and an appetite for
adventure, tummy rubs,
anything edible,
and inedible too.

Our spring sanctuary,
rebuilding family,
flush once again with
pup pandemonium —
giggles, nibbles, and
whimsical wonder —
and rebounding hope.

Carley’s arrival was a welcome wave of levity and optimism during a trying time. Three years later she’s still an uplifting joy, a daily antidote to bumps and bruises. And we’re profoundly grateful.
