Amish Adieu

I mentioned on Friday that our Amish gardeners have wrapped up for the season after six months of caretaking Rosslyn’s gardens, orchards, and grounds. Their cheerful demeanor and their diligent care will be missed, so I bid them a grateful Amish adieu until next spring.

To our Amish friends with whom we would struggle to keep Rosslyn as beautiful, bountiful, and healthy as it is, thank you. Enjoy a wonder-filled winter, and we will look forward to your return next spring.

I snapped this photo in late September one afternoon as the women were departing after a long day in the sun. It struck me then, just over a month ago, that 1) this would be a perfect image to accompany a gardening-season-ending “Amish adieu” post, and 2) it would be a bittersweet leave taking following two consecutive summers of their modest but industrious help.

You may have noticed the reserve with which I speak of the Amish family who helps us at Rosslyn. This is not for lack of respect or gratitude, but in deference to their modesty. My typical inclination is to complement with enthusiasm, but in this still recent collaboration with our Amish neighbors, we respect their understated reserve. But our appreciation is keen nevertheless! And we will spend the winter looking forward to their return in the springtime. Until then, we build the Amish adieu.
